Welcome to the CalUMS PGM Program

Professional Golf Management Mission

To provide students with the opportunity to complete a Associate’s degree in management while simultaneously completing requirements for membership in the PGA; instill the values of honesty, integrity, and ethical leadership; and encourage graduates to stay on a path of lifelong learning.

Professional Golf Management Program (PGM) provides students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry through extensive classroom studies, internship experiences, a student association and a player development program. The goal of the Professional Golf Management Program at the California University of Management and Science is to produce a graduate who meets the qualifications to be a PGA member and has a thorough background in managing golf facilities and related organizations, business and personnel management, tournament operations and player development, restaurant and hospitality management, horticulture and turfgrass aptitude, and recreation. Integration of the subject matter in the diverse curriculum, which includes courses in business (management, marketing, finance, accounting), general science (biology, chemistry, physics) plant science, food service management, communications and leadership development as well as knowledge of the game of golf and the golf industry, will be realized in the major's capstone course, seminars, and the required internships. CalUMS administrators, faculty and staff are dedicated to assisting students with both the academic and experiential aspects of the PGM Program.

CalUMS PGM

The PGM program at the California University of Management and Science provides a unique and rewarding atmosphere, and is designed to attract and educate highly motivated men and women seeking careers as golf professionals. This program is offered through CalUMS's nationally accredited College of Business and Management.

Upon completion of our two-year program, students will earn a A.S. degree in Marketing with a PGM and have all the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in today's competitive golf industry.

As a part of the marketing degree, PGM students will undergo the Integrated Business Curriculum which has helped propel the CalUMS's undergraduate business school to the top business programs in California.

PGM program melds together topics in marketing, accounting, economics, management, statistics, finance, operations, and information systems. Students are also coached in presentation skills, case studies, and team problem solving. Another fundamental is corporate involvement. A number of businesses and executives throughout all industries serve as mentors, spend time in class, and provide internships and scholarships.

PGM students complete the Management Core which helps them develop the critical skills needed to manage complex organizations. In addition, the PGM concentration requires a minimum of 3 quarters hours of golf-related curriculum, of which nine hours consist of hands-on internship experience in the golf industry.

The remaining 3 quarters hours include courses selected from the following areas:

  • golf course operations
  • turf grass management
  • club fitting and repair
  • pro shop merchandising
  • Golf swing analysis
  • sports psychology

Students also must complete all requirements in the PGA Education Curriculum, including the PGA Playing Ability Test. All golf-related courses and internships are selected with the assistance of the PGM program director.

It also provides a social outlet for students to network with future golf professionals. Throughout the year students will be exposed to guest lecturers from all areas of the golf industry to give an overall perspective of what the industry is all about and where it is headed in the future.

Students are encouraged to actively participate in every aspect of this club as possible. This club presents an opportunity for students to gain valuable life experiences and build their professional portfolio through holding offices, organizing and playing in tournaments, and having a better understanding of the PGA and golfing industry. This organization, along with the hundreds of other programs and activities available to our student population will provide PGM students with a wide variety of out-of-classroom experiences that will facilitate their growth into well-rounded professionals.

The Los Angeles area is, without a doubt, one of the best locations anywhere in the world for year round golf. South of Los Angeles in Orange County, the city of Anaheim provides warm nearly perfect playing conditions throughout the year and is an 80 mile proximity to more than 200 of the country’s finest golf facilities. Each year, the PGA and LPGA Tours host annual events including the Buick Invitation, the Kraft/Nabisco championship of the LPGA’s first major tournament of each season. This beautiful, thriving golf industry area is home to numerous championship courses, guaranteeing ready access to play at almost any time. It’s little wonder that this region produces some of the world’s most passionate and successful golfers.
